Beyond the Screen: How to Build Socratic Logic in an Age of Generative AI Shortcuts
October 21, 2024

AI tools can write essays in seconds. They bypass the process that builds real thinking. The real problem isn't plagiarism. It's that students stop working. They stop struggling. And struggle is where learning happens.
Socratic logic offers a real solution. AI is designed to give probable answers. The Socratic method questions those answers. It digs into why. It uncovers what's true at the foundation of things. Teaching this method means teaching students to ask good questions. More than having all the answers.
Three Ways to Build Socratic Thinking:
- Find the Hidden Assumptions: Every argument has unstated beliefs underneath. When an AI gives an answer, a real thinker asks: What is it assuming? What economic model? What values? What data is it using or ignoring?
- Test the Evidence: If an AI cites a study, can you find it? Does the study actually say what the AI claims? Are there other studies saying the opposite? This builds real judgment about information.
- Build from First Principles: After breaking down an AI's answer, construct your own argument from the ground up. This is hard work. But it's where real thinking happens.
In a world of instant answers, the new skill is asking the right question. By teaching Socratic logic, we equip students to build the questions that future AIs will answer.
